Petrified Wood with Termite Coprolites

Home Sweet Home

Home sweet home? Well, 20 to 34 million years ago, this slab was part of a tree that was home to termites. Their fecal pellets as well as the galleries that were once their home are now petrified for all to see. While most of the coprolite pellets appear to have rehydrated prior to fossilization and did not retained their hexagonal form, a few still retain a hint of their original shape.

Microscopic images still to come!
