Using a little imagination, you can almost see the lush, damp, floor of Illinois' Carboniferous forest. What you would see there are beautiful ferns and ornate towering lycopods. On the forest floor you would find millipedes called Arthopleuria, that grew to up to 7 1/5 feet (2.3 meters) long. No need to fear these giants, because like modern millipedes and wood lice, they fed on detritus (a fancy word for dead stuff) on the forest floor.
